Ready or not, the holiday season is quickly approaching! Just like everything else this year, celebrating the year-end holidays may look a little different. Between the stress of COVID-19 and holiday worries, the next couple of months may seem pretty daunting. To keep the mood light, start planning now to dodge those inevitable stressors. Below are some ways to destress the mess of planning your 2020 holidays.

Maintain healthy habits. Schedule your holiday plans around a healthy routine. Don’t let your holiday obligations disrupt your healthy habits!

  • Exercise. If you are short on time, make daily errands active. While the American College of Sports Medicine recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise per day, bouts of exercise as little as 10 minutes at a time can produce health benefits. Park further away from the grocery store entrance to add more steps to your day. Make a work meeting a walking meeting to keep the body moving. You will feel more energized with these short activities.
  • Healthy eating. It can be a challenge to stick to a healthy diet around the holidays. To avoid cravings or binge eating, prepare healthy snacks ahead of time. Make healthy substitutes in your holiday favorites to keep the calorie count down. Enjoy your holiday treats, but do so in moderation.
  • Sleep. Keep a healthy sleep routine. Getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night helps restore the body, boosts concentration and improves mood.

Less is more. Keep a realistic schedule. Don’t overcommit to holiday events. Some traditions may be adjusted for social distancing this year, but stay mindful of what you are able to do in these tough times. Take in the moments of happiness instead of dwelling on what traditions may be missed.

Make time for yourself. It’s important to step away from the hustle and bustle and take a breather. Set aside quiet time for a short meditation. A couple of mindful breaths can reset your mood. You can also clear your mind with calming music. If you enjoy reading, get lost in a story!

Plan low-risk activities. Keep COVID-19 guidelines in mind when planning an event. Celebrate a holiday meal virtually. Keep your gatherings small and limited to household members. Deliver contactless meals to high-risk loved ones. Being cognizant of others’ preferences for celebrating the holidays this year will increase understanding and avoid hurt feelings.

Reach out for help. Recognize the symptoms of seasonal depression, such as having low energy, sleeping too often, gaining weight and withdrawing from social situations. Carenet Health provides a robust Employee Assistance Program through MetLife with no cost to the employee. Speak to a counselor 24/7/365 at 1.888.319.7819.

2020 has been stressful enough. End the year on a positive note. Stay happy and healthy this holiday season!
